Capped vs. Uncapped Composite: What the Cap Actually Does

The cap is a thin polymer shell - typically 0.3 to 1.2 mm - fused to the board's wood-plastic core during manufacturing. It doesn't make the board stronger. It makes the surface non-organic. That's the whole trick: fading, staining, and mould all need exposed wood fibre to work on, and the cap puts a plastic skin between the wood flour and the weather.


Uncapped composite is the same wood-plastic mix all the way through, surface to core. The exposed fibre is why it greys, stains, and grows mould faster — and, counterintuitively, why it's the only composite you can sand and bring back.

If you take one thing from this: the cap is a surface technology, not a structural one. It changes how the deck looks in year twelve. It does nothing for how the deck carries load in year one.


What the cap physically is

Capping isn't a coating, a paint, or a laminate applied after the fact. The board is made by co-extrusion: the core and the shell come out of the die together and fuse while the material is still molten. There is no glue line to fail, and you can't peel it.


The shell is a different polymer from the core - commonly a modified polyethylene, or ASA, PMMA, or PVC on higher-end lines. Into that shell go the things that do the work: colour pigments, UV inhibitors, antioxidants, and mould inhibitors. The colour is in the cap, not on it. That's why a capped board doesn't "wear through" its finish the way stain does — there is no finish, only material.


Uncapped boards are the original approach. The wood-plastic blend is consistent throughout, and the wood grain you see is embossed or brushed into the surface after extrusion. That brushing is part of the problem: the process opens the plastic matrix and leaves wood fibre sitting at the surface, exactly where sun and water find it.


Three-sided vs. four-sided capping — the detail nobody checks

Not every capped board is capped all the way around. Many are capped on the top and two sides only, leaving the underside bare.


For most decks this is fine — the bottom faces a joist and never sees direct sun. It matters in two situations:

  • Elevated decks people look up at. A three-side-capped board shows a bare, greying underside from the patio below. Four-sided capping stays finished top and bottom.

  • Persistently damp installations. A bare underside is a route for moisture into the core. Ontario decks that sit low over grass, or over a poorly drained yard, spend April and November wet from underneath.


Ask which it is. It is not on the shelf tag, and the price difference between three- and four-sided is real.


What the cap actually protects against — and what it doesn't

That last one deserves a sentence, because it's where "maintenance-free" marketing collapses. A cap stops mould from eating the board. It does not stop mould from growing on the board. Leave wet leaves on a capped deck through a Southern Ontario October and you'll get black spotting in the spring — not because the board failed, but because a biofilm formed on top of a plastic surface, the way it would on a plastic patio chair. That's a cleaning problem, not a warranty claim, and manufacturers are explicit about the distinction.


The things the cap does not do

It doesn't make the board stiffer. Composite has no structural rating for framing. Cap or no cap, your joists, beams, ledger, and footings do all the work.


It doesn't fix a bad core. A thin, poorly bonded cap on a high-wood-flour core will fail faster than a well-made uncapped board. Capped is a category, not a quality grade. Cheap capped boards exist and they are worse than good uncapped ones.


It doesn't survive a cap that contains wood. Some products put wood powder in the cap layer itself. That reintroduces the exact vulnerability the cap was invented to remove — organic material at the surface, exposed to sun and water. Ask what the cap is made of. If the answer is vague, that's an answer.


The trade-off nobody mentions: repairability

Here's the part manufacturer pages skip, because it doesn't favour the product they sell.


An uncapped board can be sanded, cleaned, and brought back. It's one homogeneous material — scratch it, gouge it, stain it, and you can abrade the damage away and the board underneath is identical to the board on top. Same as wood, minus the rot.


A capped board cannot. Sand a capped board and you've removed the cap — permanently, in a patch, in a colour that no longer matches, over a core that now absorbs water. There is no touch-up. There is no refinishing. The repair for a damaged capped board is a new board.


That reverses the usual framing. Capped is more resistant to damage; uncapped is more recoverable from it. Which one you want depends on what actually happens on your deck:

  • Hot tub, planters, a barbecue, kids, a dog — high odds of a stain or a gouge, low odds of you accepting a mismatched patch. Capped, and accept that a bad gouge means swapping a board.

  • Covered porch, low traffic, willing to run a sander every few years — uncapped is a legitimate choice, not a downgrade.


Plan for the swap either way. If you go capped, buy two or three extra boards from the same production run and store them. Colours drift between runs and lines get discontinued. Ten years from now, a matching replacement board will be worth far more than the $60 you spent on it.


The end grain problem

The cap only performs if the install respects it

Everything above is a specification. Whether you get it is decided on site, by whoever is holding the saw.


A crew that builds composite the way they build pressure-treated will hand you a deck that fails at the surface long before the frame gives out. The tells are consistent:

  • End gaps skipped or eyeballed. Composite moves with temperature. Install tight in January and you've built in a buckle for August; install tight in August and you've built in a gap for January. The manufacturer publishes the number for the installation temperature. It is not a suggestion.


  • Cut ends left in the weather. A competent installer plans the layout so raw ends land under fascia, not facing out on a stair tread — and seals or plugs the ones that can't be hidden.


  • Fasteners overdriven. Hidden clips and face screws both crush the cap when they're run in too hard. A crushed cap is a breached cap.


  • Three-side-capped boards installed on an elevated deck, bare face down, over a patio people sit on.


  • A framing blade on composite, which chips the cap at every cut.


None of that s#hows up at final walkthrough. It shows up in year three.

So the question to ask an installer isn't "have you done composite?" — everyone says yes. Ask: what end gap are you using at today's temperature, and why that number? Where are the cut ends landing? Are these boards capped on three sides or four? An installer who answers those without looking anything up has built the product before. One who shrugs is about to practise on your deck.


If you're in York Region, that's worth being specific about locally, because two of the variables here aren't national - frost depth and permit thresholds are set by your municipality, not the province, and a crew that works Newmarket, Aurora, and East Gwillimbury every week already knows what your building department will ask for. A composite deck installation service in Newmarket that can answer the four questions above - and pull the permit without being reminded - is worth more than a lower number from someone who has to look up the spec sheet in your driveway.


The cap is a good technology. It just can't defend itself against a bad afternoon with a mitre saw.

What it costs in Ontario, 2026

Capped boards run roughly 20–50% more than comparable uncapped ones at the material level. In practice, that's most of the distance between an $8/sq ft entry board and a $12–14/sq ft mid-tier board — but not all of it, because tier also buys colour range, embossing quality, and core density.


Put in the context of a whole deck, the decision is smaller than it feels. On a 320 sq ft deck, moving from uncapped to a decent capped board changes the material line by roughly $1,000 to $2,000 — on an installed project of $24,000–$28,000. Boards are already only about 15% of that bill.


So: this is not the lever to pull if you're over budget. The railing spec, the deck shape, and resurface-versus-rebuild each move ten times the money. Cap is a small line with a long tail — cheap to get right, expensive to live with wrong.


How to tell what you're actually looking at

Four questions. They take ninety seconds at a lumberyard and they are not answered by the shelf tag.


  1. Is it capped at all? Look at a cut end or a sample's cross-section. A cap is visible as a distinct outer layer of a different colour or density. If the board looks like the same material all the way through, it is.

  2. How many sides? Three or four. Flip the sample.

  3. What is the cap made of, and does it contain wood? A cap with wood powder in it has the first-generation problem built in.

  4. What does the warranty cover, and for how long? Fade-and-stain, or structural? Are they the same length? Prorated? Transferable? The fade-and-stain warranty is the cap warranty — it's the manufacturer telling you, in writing, how long they think the shell will hold.


That fourth one is the most useful signal in the category. A brand that will stand behind its surface for 50 years and a brand that will stand behind it for 20 are telling you the difference between their caps more honestly than any brochure will.


Evaluation reports, code, and what your inspector cares about

Composite decking performance is assessed under ASTM D7032, and products carry evaluation reports that building officials can read. Two systems matter here:

  • ICC-ES issues the American reports most decking brands hold. You can look up a product's report directly at ICC-ES — and check the date, because reports get superseded and price charts on the internet keep linking to decade-old PDFs.


  • The Canadian Construction Materials Centre, part of the National Research Council, is the domestic equivalent and the one designated under Ontario's Building Code Act as a materials evaluation body. Ontario has recently moved to accept CCMC-assessed products without a further approval step, which makes a CCMC assessment a genuinely useful thing to see on a product you're specifying here. The registry is public: NRC — Canadian Construction Materials Centre.


What none of this does is tell you the deck is safe. Cap, core, and evaluation report say nothing about your frame. Joist spacing, ledger attachment, footing depth, and guard load are governed by the Ontario Building Code and enforced by your municipal building official — not by the board. The 2024 Building Code has been in force since January 1, 2025, so older guidance circulating online is worth double-checking against Ontario's Building Code.


One board-specific thing your inspector may care about: manufacturer-stated maximum joist spacing, which varies by product and by application. A board rated for 16″ on centre in a straight field often requires tighter spacing on a diagonal lay or as a stair tread. Don't generalise from another board's spec sheet.


Why this matters more in Ontario

Two reasons, both climate.


Freeze-thaw. Water that gets into a core doesn't just sit there — it freezes, expands, and works the material apart from the inside. A breached cap in Halifax is a cosmetic problem. A breached cap in Ontario is a countdown. This is the strongest argument for four-sided capping on any deck that stays damp underneath, and for taking end-sealing seriously on stairs.


The wet shoulder seasons. Ontario decks spend March through May and October through November under wet leaves, snowmelt, and standing water. That's when exposed fibre on an uncapped board does its greying, and when a biofilm sets up on a capped one. Different problems, same season. Neither board is maintenance-free here — one needs a sander eventually, the other needs a wash every spring.


FAQ

Is uncapped composite obsolete? No, but it's a deliberate choice now rather than a default. Modern high-density uncapped boards with more polymer and less wood flour resist mould and fading far better than the first-generation products that gave the category its reputation. If someone's selling you uncapped, ask about the wood content.


Can I mix capped and uncapped on the same deck? Don't. They expand at different rates, weather at different rates, and won't match in three years.


Does capped run hotter? Colour drives surface temperature far more than the cap does. Dark boards get hot regardless. If bare feet matter, pick a lighter colour and stop worrying about the shell.


Is capped more slip-resistant? Usually the reverse. The native texture of an uncapped board can grip well on its own, while some smooth capped surfaces rely on the embossing — or on added aggregate — for traction. If the deck surrounds a pool, ask for the slip data rather than assuming.


Can I paint or stain a capped board? No. The cap is engineered not to accept coatings, and painting it will likely void the warranty. Only old uncapped first-generation composite takes stain at all — and if you're staining composite, you've defeated the point of buying it.


Will a capped deck ever need cleaning? Yes. Soap, water, a soft brush, once or twice a year, and clear the leaves before winter. Low maintenance, not no maintenance.
